Optimize Team Structure

One of the first places to begin developing your team is to examine your team’s structure. This step may be more suited to a private discussion with the business owner or executive team.

  • What are the short-term and long-term goals of your business? Is the team currently on track to meet those goals? If not, what structural changes can be made to refocus processes on these goals?
  • Are roles and responsibilities clearly defined? Are there any tasks more suited to outsourcing than attempting to manage in-house?
  • What data do you have that might support the value of making changes to the team structure? What expenses might be cut with a particular team change, and what benefits might be gained?

Define Best Practices

Once team member roles and responsibilities are defined, outlining best practices for task execution can help to improve productivity and efficiency. The key here is to document these best practices and ensure that all team members are aligned and accountable for their responsibilities.

  • Are there any tasks that are repeatedly left on the table or not completed up to par with standards? What steps can individuals or the team as a whole take to ensure these are completed correctly and on time?
  • Do you receive common complaints from customers on a given issue? What can be done to address the issue and help to ensure that it does not occur again in the future?
  • What technologies are your team members currently using, and what processes should they be using?
